Crispy Hungarian Potato Cheese Sticks

For the Potato Mixture:

  • 4 medium potatoes, peeled
  • 1 cup (113g) shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
  • 2 tablespoons (16g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

For the Breading:

 

  • 1/2 cup (63g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 and 1/2 cups (180g) breadcrumbs
  • 2 cups vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  • Cook Potatoes: Boil peeled potatoes in salted water for 15-20 minutes until tender. Drain and cool slightly.
  • Prepare Mixture: Mash potatoes until smooth. Add flour, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, pepper, and parsley. Mix well. Fold in shredded cheese.
  • Shape Sticks: Take 2 tablespoons of mixture and roll into sticks about 3 inches long and 1 inch thick.
  • Bread the Sticks: Set up three dishes with flour, beaten eggs, and breadcrumbs. Roll each stick in flour, dip in egg, then coat with breadcrumbs.
  • Heat Oil: Pour vegetable oil into a large skillet to about 1 inch depth. Heat over medium-high heat until oil reaches 350°F.
  • Fry: Place 4-5 sticks in hot oil. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
  • Drain: Remove with slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain. Repeat with remaining sticks.

 

  • Serve: Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
